Compare that to other archive tools like WinRAR, PeaZip or WinZip. Peazip looks beautiful and packs features, but 7-Zip still wins on raw simplicity and reliability.
In fact, I hardly ever see the 7-Zip interface. It integrates right into the file manager's context menu, and extraction is often so fast that the UI barely has time to appear.

That's where 7-Zip wins for me.
It stays out of the way, so effectively that its admittedly 'old-school' interface almost doesn't matter.
Linux? Even Better
On Linux systems, you can install p7zip, a port of 7-Zip, available here.
Once installed, it works beautifully alongside file managers like Dolphin, giving you right-click compression and extraction without needing to open a separate app. 🔥

So Why Isn't It the Default?
Good question.
Operating systems prioritize simplicity and basic compatibility over power. They ship with “good enough” tools.
7-Zip is what you install when “good enough” stops being enough.
Final Thoughts
7-Zip isn't flashy. It doesn't try to impress.
It just works.
Fast, reliable, and quietly powerful.
And once you start using it, going back to default tools feels… painfully old-school.
Maybe that's the highest compliment you can give a utility.
Good software doesn't demand your attention.
